High Cholesterol Foods

You probably already know that the better the food tastes the worse it may be for your cholesterol and that high cholesterol foods can lead to heart disease and other problems. Knowing this fact and doing something about it however may be something that many people want to forget.

Doctors around the country are telling their patients to slow down and eat less cholesterol producing foods. The challenge is that these foods will send messages to your arteries to clog up and this causes many other health challenges. Some people think this is worth the risk until they have a heart attack or stoke; others head the message and wonder what to do.

You can be sure that most restaurant food and fast food will have high cholesterol ingredients. You can also be sure that some of the foods you may like to eat that are part of your culture may also be high in cholesterol. Many people think you have to stop eating these foods all together, however, after talking with your doctor you may find that you have to lower your intake of these types of foods.

High cholesterol foods also come in a variety of packaged foods that you get at the grocery store. For instance, saturated fat is one of the types of foods to stay away from if you want to lower your cholesterol. This is a food that you will find in many meats, nuts and some dairy products. Saturated fat is also in egg yolks, meat, poultry, some shellfish and higher fat milk products. Cookies, pastries and muffins also are high in cholesterol.

Trans fats are another type of fat that belongs to the high cholesterol foods category. These are the ones that people have recently been made aware of because they are most likely to be eaten as an everyday food. Many foods like margarine, most snack foods, processed foods and fried foods have trans fats. Trans fats are more dangerous than saturated fat because they actually raise LDL levels ("bad") and lower HDL levels which are the good cholesterol and you don't want that to happen.

An individual who wants to be conscious of what they eat should make sure that they know the difference in the fats they are eating and make an attempt to eat more healthy foods. You can always trade certain types of foods for others instead of feeling like you have to cut everything out of your diet. For instance, instead of having meat every night, you can substitute fish a few nights of the week instead.

Putting more fruits and vegetables into your diet will also help you lower cholesterol levels. If you haven't eaten this way before, you will love the variety that you can find in either fresh, canned or frozen foods.

Eating better foods takes a little getting used to but most people find that they feel better. Your arteries and your heart will thank you and your family will love the fact that you are going to live longer.
