How to Reduce Cholesterol

Your doctor has told you that you must change your eating habits because you have to be mindful about your cholesterol -- but you wonder how to reduce cholesterol. There are many things that you can do in order to accomplish your goal and they are simple things. They may mean slight changes in your life style, but they work for many people.

Some of the factors of high cholesterol come from heredity and some of it is from your diet. You could be having problems in either or both of these areas. The good news is you can do something about it and many of the changes you will need to make are small ones.

One of the fastest ways to change your cholesterol levels is to be careful about what you eat. Many people choose fast food because they are on the go and they can grab it on the way to an appointment. However, this may be the first thing to cut out because it is full of fats you don't need and lots of sugar. Some other ways include:

  1. Eat foods that are low in saturated fats.
  2. Begin to replace your saturated fats with unsaturated fats.
  3. Eat foods that are healthier for you like fish, fruits and vegetables.
  4. Cut back on snacks like potato chips, cookies, and muffins.
  5. Eat foods with fiber or add fiber supplements to your diet.
  6. If you need to lose weight, talk to your doctor to help you with a plan.

Doctors and other health practitioners will tell you that you will need to do these things so it probably won't be a surprise. However, what kinds of foods can you eat that will teach you how to reduce cholesterol? You might be surprised at your choices.

Although there nice juicy beef steaks that you like to cook on the grill there are other meats that are healthier and better for you. For instance, instead of beef try buffalo (also called bison). Although it may sound weird, it is a meat that tastes like beef but it is lower in fat, cholesterol and calories than beef. It is high in iron and protein so you may find that you aren't missing anything. If you can't find it in your grocery or health food stores, you can find it online. Elk can be another great choice.

Instead of high cholesterol chips and pastries, there are many other choices that are lower fat. You can find angel food or devil's food cake, low fat brownies or cheese cake that will taste just like all the other foods you enjoy. In fact, when you start eating them, you probably won't notice a real difference.

You can also try fruit snacks, ginger snaps or vanilla wafers because they are all low fat snacks. The only challenge is that you have to remember that you can't eat more of it just because it shows you how to reduce cholesterol.  Finding substitutions for the things that you enjoy can be just the right thing to lower your cholesterol.
